UNESCWA : Review - Outcomes from Pan-Arab Regional WSIS Prepcom: The Cairo Declaration

‘…‘…Regional integration and mobilization of Arab resources is the only way to move to knowledge economy and to build the infrastructure necessary to spread Arab information applications’: this was one of the key points of the Cairo Declaration adopted by delegates at the Arab regional preparatory conference for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) from 16 – 18 June 2003 in Cairo (Egypt). Hosted by the Egyptian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MCIT) and jointly organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and League of Arab States (LAS) in co-ordination by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the conference followed after the Western Asia Preparatory Conference for WSIS held in Beirut (Lebanon) from 4 – 6 February 2003 – the key outcome of which was the Beirut Declaration (see UN: Outcomes from West Asia Regional WSIS Prepcom: The Beirut Declaration). Building on the Beirut Declaration, the Cairo Declaration adopted by delegates at the conference reach a common Arab vision of the Information Society and provide regional inputs into the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for WSIS (PrepCom-3) to be held in September 2003.

World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is the two-phase United Nations (UN) summit being held in Geneva in December 2003 and Tunis in 2005 (see also UN: General Assembly Adopts Resolution On WSIS). The summit aims to ‘develop a common vision and understanding of the information society…and to draw up a strategic plan of action for successfully adapting to the new society’.

The meeting in Cairo was the final one of six regional meetings scheduled to gather input for the Summit:
